NBYC thanks all the competitors for making this and outstanding regatta, and we congratulate Matt Wefer from Glen Head, NY on winning the 2006 New England Optimist Championship. A total of 372 boats competed including 37 in the Green Fleet, a record turnout for this event and the largest Opti regatta in the US this year.

Winning in the 41 boat White Fleet was Malcolm Lamphere from Norfolk, VI. In the 163 boat Blue Fleet Blue was Ian Stokes from Norfolk, Virginia and the 132 boat Red Fleet was won by Matt Wefer. The Girls division had 117 boats and was won by Eliza Richartz from Old Lyme , CT. Eliza was also 2nd overall. Please see the Results page for race details.

We had 4 days of beautiful weather with only a brief shower on Monday, August 6. The championship fleet of 335 boats was divided into 6 divisions making for a challenging starting line averaging 112 boats. Six sets of races were run by PRO Ron Hopkins, and RC Chair Jim Hall, and racers were able to drop their worst race.

The Green Fleet got in 11 races under the guidance of Race Committee Chair Wick Haylon.

We want to thank our major sponsors Dunkin’ Donuts, Coca-Cola of SE New England, Merrill Lynch, Smith Insurance and Vanguard Sailboats.  We could not have run this regatta  without the support of town of East Lyme, in particular its Park and Rec Dept. The local promotion of the event by 38 participating merchants in offering the free drawing of a Race Ready Vanguard Opti complete with Black Gold spars, a North racing sail, and a Seitech dolly was a highlight. And, finally we want to thank the 187 volunteers from our Club for making this a memorable event for all of us.
